I can't hear anything

Why does it want headphones?

Several parts of Burnish place sound in space rather than just playing it — most obviously ear to ear, where a sound crosses from one side of your head to the other. That relies on timing and level differences between your two ears, and a phone speaker cannot reproduce it. Everything works without headphones; some of it just means less.

The screen moves too much

Open Sound & motion and set Motion to Reduced. That freezes the drifting background while leaving the sound and the haptics exactly as they were — turning it down should calm the screen, not quieten the app. Follow system honours your iOS Reduce Motion setting instead.

The picker keeps disappearing

That is deliberate. The grid of triggers slides away once you start playing, so the thing you are touching gets the whole screen. The small handle at the bottom brings it back — tap it or swipe up. If you open it by hand it stays open until you close it by hand.

The sound breaks up

Burnish generates every sample as it plays, which is demanding. If the phone is hot — after charging, direct sun, or a long session of something heavy — iOS slows the processor down and audio can stutter. Let it cool and it clears. If it happens on a cool device, please email, because that is a real fault and worth knowing about.

Does it need an account or the internet?

Neither. Burnish has no accounts and makes no network requests at all — it works exactly the same in aeroplane mode. See the privacy policy.

Does it store anything about me?

No. It remembers five settings on your device — volume, silent-switch behaviour, motion, control sounds, and whether you have seen the introduction. Nothing about you, nothing sent anywhere, and no history of what you did or when.
